Serotonin review paper published

Renée Koolschijn, Bertalan Polner, Julie Hoomans, Roshan Cools, Eliana Vassena and Hanneke den Ouden have collaborated to publish a review paper to combine recent theories and findings on serotonin. The article explores how serotonin, traditionally linked to mood and cognition, may serve a central function in meta-decision-making. They propose a framework where serotonin integrates information on resource availability and state value to represent a cost-benefit trade-off at the neural level. They suggest that serotonin influences not only reward processing but also persistence, controllability of the environment, and personal experiences that shape decision-making styles. However, the complexity of the serotonergic neuromodulatory system is also acknowledged. You can read the full pdf here.
